While the even-numbered namespaces are typically for document mode such as articles and policy pages, and help pages, for each there is an odd-numbered namespace for discussion, in thread mode.

There are exceptions, e.g. w:en:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) is discussion in thread mode, its talk page is about the organization of the discussion.

Every page that is not itself a talk page, has (potentially) an associated talk page in the corresponding talk namespace (see below); one can follow the link labeled with the content of MediaWiki:Talk (instead of talk it could also e.g. be discussion).

Talk pages are used to discuss changes to the corresponding page. User talk pages are used to leave messages for a particular user. After someone else edits the talk page of one's main user page, the alert "You have new messages" is automatically displayed on all pages that the user views, until he or she views his/her user page.

Contributions are signed; for a convenient way, see Help:Editing shortcuts.

When discussing the name of the page or discussing merging it with another page, always mention the current page name: after renaming (moving) a page with its talk page, references to "this page name" would not make sense.

On a talk page, "this page" usually refers to the page with which this talk page is associated. If the talk page itself is referred to, write "this talk page".

The "Post a comment" feature allows convenient appending of a section with the section header the same as the edit summary, and typed only once.

This also works on other than talk pages, there is only no link for that, one has to use the url, e.g. http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Sandbox&action=edit&section=new

Talk namespaces

Except for special pages, each namespace has an associated talk namespace. The talk namespaces are designated by adding talk: to the normal prefix. For example, the talk namespace associated with the main article namespace has the prefix Talk:, while the talk namespace associated with the user namespace has the prefix User talk:.
